marching band should be always cosidered a sport bc like some people said it can be dangerous with all the people and equipment.. im in the drum marching cymbals i tripped and broke three ribs on them... it can be dangerous and we practice everyday all day

cuz we work hard too just like any other sport...possibly not as tough as other sports but its still tiring and take's time to perfect. =)

I agree with ashley...

ok look i am in marching band and have been in it for 3 years now. We have to memorize where we are going on the field, try not to run into each other, and memorize some pretty complicated music. We work 2 and half hours a day 4 days a week plus a game every week. Then we have competitions that we have to go to to compete in. And while people have their summers we are at the school learning to march again and learn some of the drill. We have so many injuries. I injured my leg trying to do a move but you know what it is worth it. I love marching and I wouldn't have it any other way. So people who says that marching isn't a sport, I want to see you try and see if you can last even an hour of what we do. Because what we do is amazing.

according to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sport a sport is Main Entry: 2sport Function: noun Date: 15th century 1 a : a source of diversion : recreation b : *$&!#! play c (1) : PHYSICAL ACTIVITY ENGAGED IN FOR PLEASURE so unless you have a disagreement with the dictionary, stop being such a close-minded brute. Wish you well when you get a concussion!

We spend a %*%*-load of time outside in 100+ degree weather with 90% humidity. We get broken bones, torn achilles tendons, get wacked with color gaurd equipment, spend 8 hours a week practicing, having to remember all of our sets... We have to do just as much as anyone else

Hey man people in marching band have it just as tough as you if not harder MY Girlfriend is in marching band and by the way she explains it I have memories of practice (my sport not hers) popping up all the time. I've seen them practice and believe me it doesn't seem easy.

Danielle Posted: Nov 05, 2008 at 10:37 AM EST

lets see where to begin ok its physically demanding we have to remember where we are going if we screw that up it screws up everyone around us and then we have to memorize our music or for me my work on rifle and flag and we are out at practice in the heat for several hours just like any other sport must i continue???????????

Marching band is a sport because we compete against other schools. If you're good, you go to finals, just like any other sport.

My dad was a football player in high school, so I get where you're coming from. He never realized how much work we put into it until my second yer, when he joined the medical team.

We work just as hard as the football team does. They work on plays, and tackling, while we work on drill sets, and getting them perfect. In a football game, there's a little room for a screw up, you can always regain points. But bands have to be perfect.

We have long rehearsals in the sun. We run around a football field nonstop for ten minutes while playing instruments, which doesn't allow for the lungs to work normally. And while you are physically exerting yourself like that, you must still maintain enough focus to watch the drum major, play the right notes, stay in time, and keep good posture. If you fall, you have about two seconds to recover and get back to where you need to be. I know three people who got injured last season. We have competitions that operate much like sporting tournaments and receive trophies/medals for what we do. Not a sport? You tell me.

ok try doing 8 or 9 mins of non stop moving and add playing and instrument to that AND doing effects....its like a mix between drama, football, and band XD

Well I feel that a lot of people have already stated most of it, I want to put my two cents in also. While there is no real support by my school or most schools to consider marching band a sport and give it all the support that being a sport gets, I believe it really is necessary to look at each marching band and figure out whether it is actually an active marching band. I have been to my fair share of marching band shows where there is a band that has an 8 minute show almost made up entirely of long halts with 36 count moves that could be done in only 8 counts. Those bands should not be called a sport just like the junior level sports teams really should not be considered a team.

If you don't think marching band is a sport, what should we call it? I'm sorry we don't get slammed by 300 pound guys in protective equipment. I'm sorry we don't use a ball. I'm sorry our competitions are too complicated for a football player to understand. Why don't you come up with a name for us to call it?

Ok how is marching band NOT a sport. We have practice everyday Monday through Friday. We also have band camp for nine days nine hours, at our school. We have Saturday practices. We do push-ups, run and work just as hard as other sports. We get up at 5 in the morning to practice and go to competition and get back like around 3 in the morning! Just because we are not using a ball, doesnt mean that we are not a sport. The definition of a sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. We have to hold heavy instruments up for hours at a time, and marching is hard, pulling your toes up for hours too. and we sure are cometitive!

I don't carry heavy equipment. I play clarinet and it weighs like somewhere from three - five pounds. Like I'm going to die holding it. Also, you're a football jock so you wouldn't understand band geeks such as myself.

still waiting for a response to my question!

Ashleigh Posted: May 21, 2008 at 05:11 PM EDT

oK this is a very debatable topic and i not sure personally. I am in the marching band at jcs so i am not the best judge but we had this discussion in debate class since we do physical things by the techinal definition of sport we would be a sport but by the standards of most modern sports we wouldnt be so as you can see that its a very debatable topic :):):):)

Ok i wont say band is a sport. Drumline is. Some of us carry 40 to 5 pounds for hours on end and have to play it at the same time. it sucks bro. Band well liek the wind people they can get a life cuz they cmplain all night long while drummers #@!! around and also run laps9usually cuz were bored or in truble) and drumlines across america have to do multiple wieght lifting activities to sterenghthen our bodies and to gain muscles. So drumline is a sport, band isn't quite a sport even tho they do have to march and "exert" themselves.

Marching band should be considered a sport because the members of the marching band are doing physical things just like every other sport. I have discussed this topic with many of my friends and we have come to a conclusion. People who want to know why marching band is a sport because they don't have respect for the band. Depending on your high school, you can spend a month or two before school starts working on the marching band activities. My school starts the last week of July and goes for three weeks from 8:00-5:00 in the evening in band camp working on our show and teaching the new marchers what they need to know. The week after band camp/before school starts, we have practice from 3:15-5:30 practicing our show and adding new moves. When school starts we have practice at the same time also. In my opinion marching band does more work than any other sport. I hope this answers your question.
