NOT A SPORT!
There's a lot of controversy of what is a sport and what's not a sport. I personally think that there are a lot of categories here on Takkle that are considered a "sport" but shouldn't be. Such as: Cheerleading, dancing, marching band, gymnastic, etc. THE LIST GOES ON AND ON... lets go ppl add on!

I know what ppl think about wrestling, that were gay for wrestling around with other guys but were not. Most wrestlers work very hard to get where they are. I would like to see cheerleading try wrestling for a week, they'd get destroyed!

wow the only thing that is so wrong about your statement peter is that gymnastics and dancing are sports. i have been dancing for 13 years and i defintaly consider it a sport. i have 15 hours of dance a week and thats problay more than a football player. and gymnastics is definatly a sport my friend spends 30 hours a week practing gymnastics so i highly doubt that fact that people say its not a sport because it most definatly is. anyways i dont think weightlifting is a sport because the dont do anything besides lift a weight up and down.

cheerleading is definitely a sport.........if you look it up its been official for a year.....it should have been longer than that but anyways we compete agianst other teams. people like you that say its not a sport are people who only see cheerleading as what they see in high school. you have never seen real chearleading, ALLSTAR CHEERLEADING!!!! this type of cheerleading takes more dedication than any other sport and take 3x the work. id like you to try it and see how you couldnt last 5 minutes........lmao

I don't consider marching band a sport. It may be tough but that doesn't make it a sport. Look at ESPN, they cover: Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, soccer, tennis, golf, nascar, boxing, the olympics, and a few others. Cheerleading and marching band aren't there. Why? ESPN only covers sports.

I know a lot of cheerleaders and the only reason why I would doubt to actually BE a sport is because half of those girls are out of shape and don't deserve to be called athletes. There are the few however that I do consider athletic. Dancing is...I'm not sure if it's a sport- more like a very fun hobby. Marching band- not so much. Gymnastics is DEFINITELY a sport. Those gymnast work so hard and definitely have the qualities of an athlete. And btw, running is a sport if you categorize it into cross country or track/field.

Cheerleading is a sport!!! Are you kidding me?! I was a cheerleader and its hard work. I've competed at state and we took 1st! Don't even try and tell me cheerleading isn't one, b.c until you've tried it, you have no room to talk. Do you think volleyball shouldn't be considered a sport?!

Just because an activity is physically demanding, does not in any way constituted it as a sport. Anything that requires you to come up with a routine and perform that specific routine is not a sport. Sports, are activities in which a quantitative manner take precedence over the qualitative characteristics. In other words, in football, baseball, basketball, or any other sports where you score, is a sport, because the total points are quantitative and not based on individual performance. As long as you get the job done, somehow, and score more points than the other team, you win. Any activity that has a score based on how well it is performed; cheerleading, gymnastics, band, diving, or anything else that you receive points for how well you accomplish something, is not a sport. This is simply because you are not executing the same exact routine, or moves as the other team or person. That is why some activities are sports, and some are just activities :)

I agree with Mitch. I mean anything that requires dedication, endurance and such is a sport. At my school, we have Band Camp for TWO WEEKS, Mon-Fri 8:30am-9pm. Then we have Tuesday, Thursday, Monday(Percussion), Friday and Saturday practices. While Football practice has been canceled or is in the gym because of the heat WE are outside sweating. We have run laps, carrying heavy instruments, and play while moving. My friend Brian said that he thinks Marching Band is harder then Football because it requires mental and physical endurance. If something is harder then football, are you really going to not call it a sport?? Track and Field is a sport all the way. We all work hard trying to work up to the States and Regionals.

Ok how is marching band NOT a sport. We have practice everyday Monday through Friday. We also have band camp for nine days nine hours, at our school. We have Saturday practices. We do push-ups, run and work just as hard as other sports. We get up at 5 in the morning to practice and go to competition and get back like around 3 in the morning! Just because we are not using a ball, doesnt mean that we are not a sport. The definition of a sport is an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature. We have to hold heavy instruments up for hours at a time, and marching is hard, pulling your toes up for hours too. and we sure are cometitive!

Track is a sport. thats all i've got to say. i probably have the most jacked legs i have ever seen on a girl my age. i dont think cheerleading is a sport at all. really i dont. i consider a sport is something that makes you sweat within the first 10 minutes of practice. :]

some people say that volleyball isn't a sport. that's !#@!. we have to run at least 25 suicides per week plus conditioning day when we run 4 miles and lift weights.

ok well after being a cheerleader for over 6 yrs and now being a powerlifter I have to say that cheerleading is a sport i mean yea now i have to lift weights everyday but when i was cheerleading we ran at 5 every morning 3 miles then hit the gym to lift weights then had practice for an hour which consist of jumps and lifts which really is harder than you think i would love to see some of you try and pull half the things cheerleaders do for example one handed lifts!!! Powerlifting and cheerleading are to time demanding sports!!!! and i have nothing against the other sports even though i do agree that marching band and checkers aren't sports sorry!!!

chess, cheerleading, and marching band are definitely NOT sports

and in response to Nick: "track i dont se how running can be considered a sport cause in that case everysport is a part of track cause in every real sport u have to run at least a little. " this is not true. in sports like soccer and football you are competing/running to score points, etc etc. track holds races, just like swimming and rowing (which btw you don't run in during the events)
