Marching band is a sport!
Am i the only one on the site that is sick of all the @!*&#!%& that say marching band isn't a sport when in fact he band practices just as much if not more than any other "sport" and we six times the amount of stuffwe have to, not only do we march, we learn drill carry instruments that weight seventy or eighty pounds leran memorize music get judged and compete against other bands, and it happens every week, sounds a lot harder than throwing a ball through a hoop or tackling the *$%# out of someone like rabid beast am i right right? I would love to see a jock strap on a drum march around a field and memorize music every wekk for six months, when someone does that, then they say marching band insn't a sport!

I could care less about whether or not it’s a sport. However, all things aside I march in drum corps. We wake up at seven, we play until 1AM, and practices involve holding a 10-pound baritone for up to 5 hours at a time while running in 100-degree weather for about the whole time. Then we do the same thing for every weekend and then we do that every day in June and then we travel in a bus and only get about 4 hours a sleep a day and then we COMPETE against other drum corps(that have been doing the same thing we have) and then we go perform in front of thousands of people. Doctors compare the physical extortion of drum corps to that of Olympiads. Marching band isn’t exactly drum corps.

sport (spôrt, sprt) n. 1. a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. b. A particular form of this activity. 2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

Thats the definition of a sport. In marching band you are not competing head to head with another school with a set of rules or a score. Therfore it is not a sport. I completely agree with Alyssa.

I agree too. Lot a people at the High school I was from believe that it should be a sport. It's harder then any other sport, we have longer hours then the other teams, right?

i Absolutely agree. Marching band is a sport. i just started as a freshman this summer and it is very hard work. after the second day of camp, after learning drill after drill, espicially on the drumline, i was tired and felt like i had just gone through a long off ice traning session. so i say WHO EVER DOES NOT THING MARCHING BAND IS NOT A SPORT CAN %*#@ OFF!

and if people think marching band is so easy, why dont they try it? we just make it look easy.

and i dont think that one instrument should be considered the hardest to march. i'm in colorguard and i hear stuff from every section. lets just say that everything is hard to march. i'm not going to complain about guard being the hardest, but we do have our difficulties, just like everyone else.

i have to agree that marching band is a sport. i'm about to sound like a geek, but i looked up sport in the dictionary (just to prove my point) and it says that the word sport means 'an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature'

marching band requires skill and its DEFINATELY competitive. its extremely competitive in fairfax county. every band in the school district goes down to JMU and competes every year.

yes, we do have heinous uniforms. i will admit it.

we learn about 80 sets of drill for one month and then perform it for 2 months. we clean and add visuals and stuff, and memorizing 80 sets of drill and music and visual is difficult.

Marching band is totally a sport... in fact our athletic director told us that if marching band was any eaiser than it would be considered a sport... like it is a sport but we can't technically be considered a sport... cause it much to hard!! YAY!!!

Marielle Posted: Jul 25, 2008 at 05:48 PM EDT

Hahaha, nah, no it's not.

If marching band is a sport, walking down the street with your ipod on is a sport. Okay wait maybe not... I mean, walking down the street listening to your ipod while wearing a really heinous get-up would be a sport.

well i think band is a sport. we win trophies right? sports win trophies some way or another, not hobbies. hobbies are something you do cause you like to do during spare time and it doesnt require the commitment, hard work and disipline that band is known for. and i know about disipline, im a drummer

i am in marching band infact I play the trombone which it one of the hardest instruments to keep a good horn angle on and I say that MARCHING BAND IS NOT A SPORT IT IS A HOBBY. when someone asks me what sports do you play i say none when someone asks what are your hobbies/passions i say music/band. We might work hard but that dosent make us a sport. And you dont have to physically work hard to be considered a sport. Racecar driving has barely andthing physical unless they get in a wreck or something and they are a sport. Majority rules...marching band is a hobby no matter what everyone thinks on here because we are marching band members duh we are gonna think its a sport [except me] but if u ask random non band members they will say no its not a sport.

i think marchin band is a sport cause we march round in the hot sun from 2:30 to 5:15 and we lose more wat than some other sports do so they cant sit there and call marchin band not a sport cause as far as im concerned it is!!!!!!!
