- About Me:
- Hello, my name is Megan. I currently attend high school, and live on Long Island, New York. My sport and passion is horseback riding. I am a full-fledged equestrian. I ride and compete English, but can ride Western events such as barrels, poles, cattle chasing, etc. Along with Classical riding, I also believe in Natural Horsemanship, and have trained under the well known Sonny Garguilo. I have also trained with Bridgette Harwood and Wedrich Joubert. At this time, I do not own my own horse, simply because I cannot afford it. I do however, take lessons once a week, and compete in shows in the spring/summer/fall. I began riding when I was 7 years old and have loved it ever since. By the time I was 11 I started volunteering at the local stables (Lakewood Stables), and competed in my first B rated show. By the time I was 12 I rode school horses, hack horses as well as numerous privately owned horses. After a few years, I moved my riding out east (towards Center Moriches and Yhapank). I rode the local "backyard barn" horses as well as horses at the local stables. I competed in more shows such as the LI Gold Cup and continued to compete at Winners Circle. I also have ridden at Hidden Pond Stables, Bethpage Stables, Indian Head Stables, and now I currently ride at Stanhope Stables in Woodbury (Farmingdale, New York). However, I am not the typical client when it comes to riding and horse shows. I work in order to ride. I do not have the liberty to show up just in time for warm-up and have everything done for me without getting a speck of dust on my boots. No, I am my own groom, not only by choice but because I am required to work in order to persue my passion. My show day is two days long. The day before the show, I have to bathe the horses, clean all of the tack, load the trailer with tack and such and wrap the horses legs. The next day, show day, I begin at 5-6 AM (for local shows). It is my responsibility to groom the horses, load them, unwrap their legs, tack the horses, hold the unused horses for long periods of time, run back adn fourth between the trailers and rings, lunge the horses, school for other riders, fetch and carry large buckets of water, groom throughout the day, bathe the horses when finished, wrap the horses again, unbraid the manes and tails, and load the horses again. Oh, and if I am lucky, I get to show in a divison, using my work to cut down on costs. But it really is not as grueling as it sounds. I actaully love it! I believe that riding, showing and working each play a special part in the world of horses. To me, if you are not willing to get dirty working or establish a connection with the horse, you are missing out on what it is all about. My future plans include, the Hampton Classic, various other shows, volunteering at therapuetic riding centers (such as Pal-O-Mine or HorseAbility), teaching lessons, and going to college. I am determined to go to a college with an equestrian team, but I can only dream of going to a NCAA Varsity Equestrian College. I would love to go to Brown or Dartmouth, but unfortunately I cannot afford the tuition fees. That is why I have decided to apply for any equestrian scholarship that comes my way. I have always been warned or told that I will never have what the wealthier people have. Or that I will never reach their level of riding because I was not born priviledged. But I still hope that someday my years of hard work and determination will pay off and enable me to continue follow my dreams.
